16 & Under Boys Compete in Spain--June/July 2011
Combining great water polo and cultural exposure the Greenwich Water Polo teams have shown their mettle and enjoyed a great trip to Spain this summer.  Below are details of their games so far.

Day 1:  Barcelona
Greenwich Water Polo´s first day of action in Barcelona Spain was a day of close calls.  In four games, the GWP´´s 16& under boys team ended up with two ties and two two-goal defeats.
The first game for the GWP-A Team was played at the beautiful C.N. Molins de Rei Club´s pool against the Girona Water Polo Team and was a defensive struggle.  On the strength of saves by Greenwich goalie Simon Tebbe, GWP was able to stay in the game and goals by Julian Fraser and Robert Peterson enabled GWP to tie the score for a 2-2 tie.

The second  GWP-A Team game was against Maresme Water Polo, and GWP-A also tied 6-6.  In a hard fought see-saw game, J Whelan, Matthew Fraser, James Baker each scored 2 goals each with scores by Baker and Whelan near the end of the game completing a dramatic comeback.

Playing in the shining new C.N. Sant Feliu Club, Greenwich kept digging itself into holes in the two afternoon games.  Against Girona, the GWP 16/under team quickly fell behind 3-0.  A man-up goal by Baker, an inside shot by Julian Fraser off a rebound and a goal by Sean Lyons tied it up the game late in the second quarter. Baker opened the second half with the tying goal and Robert Peterson fired a perimeter shot to give the Greenwich team its first lead, 5-4.  The lead was short lived and Girona quickly came back with two goals of its own to re-take the lead.  After a man-up goal by Whelan on an assist by Joey Tambascio, the score was knotted for the fourth time in the game, 6-6.  But Girona scored twice and Greenwich was unable to answer.  So GWP tasted defeat its first defeat, 8-6.

Two hours later, GWP-A squared off for a re-match with Maresme and this time it dug a hole too deep to climb out of.  Matthew Fraser did provide an early 1-0 lead.  But Maresme scored six times in the half to take an insurmountable 6-1 lead.  GWP-A fought back with goals from J Whelan, Matthew Fraser bringing the score to 6-5 but the game ended in a 7-5 defeat.

"At the very least, we proved that our GWP-A team was competitive with the local teams of Barcelona, the hub of water polo in Spain, and that our team is willing to fight to the end with a never-say-die spirit," said GWP Head Coach Terry Lowe.
The GWP-B team opened the day playing the Valles Club and Baix Llobregat.  Playing the best in Barcelona, the younger team struggled in its first 2 games losing 10-2 and 11-1.  Goals by Alexander Lewis, Jack Robinson highlighted the game and the goalie play, even in defeat by Steve Michaud.
In rematches in the afternoon, GWP-B again lost to Valles by a lopsided 11-1 score but started to come together against Baix Llobregat. Three goals highlight by Sam Prout´s strong perimeter goal made it 6-3 at the end of the first half.  Five saves by Michaud kept GWP-B in the game.  In the end Baix pulled away for a better-than-it-sounds 10-4 loss.

Day 3-Barcelona
It was an exciting night of water polo at the Barcelona ´92 Olympic Water Polo pool.  Playing for the second time against the Catalan all stars - 18 of the top players from 12 of the region's clubs - the 16-under Greenwich Water Polo team provided a real test for the Barcelona area team.

In the early stages, the boys of Greenwich fell behind by one goal four times, but quickly responded each time to tie the game.  James Baker, Sean Lyons, Robert Peterson started the scoring and then Matt Fraser took over to complete a “hat trick”. Playing in a 30-meter pool and with an 11-member squad vs. 18-member Spanish all-star team finally took its tolls.  Despite 10 saves by Simon Tebbe the game ended in a 10-6 loss. "We did a much better job defensively and it was a hard fought match from beginning to end," said Coach Terry Lowe.  "We really gave them a battle and have already greatly improved our play in the more physical and quicker play by the Spaniards," said Lowe. "I am really proud of the way our team has responded to the challenge."

The GWP-B team, defensively really stood their ground.  Michaud was great in the goal and overall they did a super job in holding the opposition to six goals in a 6-3 loss.  Austin Bridges scored the first goal for GWP.  Jack Robinson lobbed in the second goal.  Alex Lewis made a good inside move to earn a five-meter penalty shot ... which Bridges nailed it to make it 4-3.

Una gran experiencia para los chavales.!!!
